How to Prepare for Yoga Teacher Training
A 200-hour yoga teacher training is rewarding and demanding. Here's how to prepare for YTT—physically, mentally, and practically—so you get the most from your 200hr YTT in Davao or Siargao.
Physical Preparation for YTT
You don't need to be advanced, but a consistent practice helps. In the months before your 200hr YTT, aim for regular asana (even 30 minutes most days) and some pranayama. Build stamina gradually so your body can handle longer practice days. If you're new to yoga, consider joining our online yoga classes Philippines to establish a baseline. Focus on showing up, not on being "ready"—the training is designed to meet you where you are.
If you have injuries or health concerns, share them with us before the start. We can suggest modifications and ensure the program is safe for you. Some trainees increase their practice frequency in the month before (e.g. five or six days a week) to simulate the intensity; others prefer to stay steady and avoid burnout. Listen to your body. The goal is to arrive healthy and energized, not exhausted from over-preparing.
Mental and Lifestyle Readiness
YTT is immersive. Clear your schedule as much as possible and set expectations with family or work. Get enough sleep before you arrive. Some trainees like to read an intro to yoga philosophy (e.g. the Yoga Sutras) or anatomy so the concepts feel familiar. Come with curiosity and openness rather than pressure to perform. A journal is useful for reflection during the course.
Emotionally, be prepared for ups and downs. The intensity of practice, the depth of philosophy, and the vulnerability of teaching practicum can bring things to the surface. That's normal and often part of the growth. Having a support system—someone to call or message—can help. Also, set boundaries with work: let colleagues know you'll be limited or offline so you're not stressed about emails during the 200hr YTT.
Logistics and Packing
Bring a good mat, comfortable practice clothes, and any props you use (block, strap). For Siargao or Davao, pack for the climate: light, quick-dry layers, sunscreen, insect repellent. Have your travel and accommodation confirmed. We send a pre-arrival list with specifics for each 200hr YTT intake. If you have questions before you come, reach out—we're happy to help you prepare for yoga teacher training.
Don't overpack. You'll be in practice clothes most of the day; a few sets that you can wash and rotate is enough. Bring any medications or supplements you need; availability may be limited at your location. A reusable water bottle, a small first-aid kit, and perhaps a few snacks for the first day or two are useful. We'll confirm whether mats and props are provided or if you should bring your own.
What Not to Worry About
You don't need to know the Sanskrit names of poses, have a perfect handstand, or have taught before. The 200-hour YTT is designed to take you from where you are to a place where you can lead a safe, thoughtful class. Comparing yourself to others will only add stress; everyone has different strengths. Focus on your own growth, ask questions, and trust the process. Preparation is helpful, but the real transformation happens during the training itself.
